Year 2 Home Learning

Parental Guide to Year 2

Read Write Inc. Phonics Parental Guide

Should your child need to self-isolate or if we experience a local lockdown we will use the resources on this page to continue your child’s learning at home so that no future learning is lost. Teachers will continue to communicate with parents or guardians using ClassDojo. This page is for children in Year 2 who are pupils in Class 3 with Miss Dixon or Class 4 with Mrs Whiley.

Your child must follow the daily schedule for their year group on the Oak National Academy. They can also access Education City, Oxford Owl, The Spelling Shed and Numbots to support their learning at home.

Click the link below to access Oak National Academy, the online classroom made by teachers, for teachers. You will have access to free, high-quality video lessons and resources to support your child’s learning in English, maths, science and the Foundation subjects at home. They are delivered by a teacher, with a pre-recorded video as well as quizzes, worksheets and creative activities. It’s all easy to use, there’s no login or password, you can access our lessons on any device, and pupils only need materials they can find at home.

In Year 2 your child will be building up a range of reading skills. They should have strong phonics knowledge and growing comprehension skills, which will help them read more broadly, confidently, and fluently. In May 2021, your child will take their Key Stage 1 SATS. The tests include maths and English sections which includes two reading papers. Please continue to read on a daily basis with your child and ask them questions about the text. Visit Oxford Owl for free eBooks that link to your child’s book band. There are also linked play activities for each book which make reading fun. You can create a free account at: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/

You will need to use your own email address and set up a password to access this site.

You could help at home by encouraging children to write ‘golden sentences’. These are sentences that begin with a capital letter, have finger spaces between words, and a full stop at the end. Your child could answer comprehension questions about the books they have read using golden sentences or retell the story they have read.

Children have free access NUMBOTS to support their maths at home. Passwords have been stuck inside children’s reading records. Contact your class teacher on ClassDojo for a username and password if you have misplaced them.
