Relationships with parents

We pride ourselves on our relationships with families and can not emphasise enough how much we value your support. You know your child best and we want to share your knowledge and build strong relationships that enable your child to flourish in our care.

Class Dojo

One way in which we foster strong relationships is through the Class Dojo app. Through class dojo we can build a portfolio of work based upon your child’s learning in and out of school. Through using this app together, we can build a picture of our children’s experiences, development and learning journey through their early years of school life. Using photos and videos, staff can weave the story of a child and show how they are growing and developing. Parents are able to view this portfolio online and can add their own comments and media.

Dojo is also a useful way for you to contact us to update or inform us of something. If it is an urgent matter, please contact the school office as messages are not always seen immediately when staff are teaching.

A Typical day

A typical day at Millbrook Nursery consists of your child experiencing a mix of whole class and small group teaching along with independent and adult-guided play. All of our activities are planned to be practical, engaging and to match the developmental needs and interests of our children. We listen carefully to our children to understand their interests and experiences and plan accordingly. We also cover special themes and topics and celebrate significant holidays throughout the year.

Our indoor classroom is organised into various continuous provision areas: creative, painting, sand and water, dough, reading, role play, writing, construction and small world, number and investigation and our outdoor classroom allows children to explore even more areas with a gross motor skills area for climbing and building, a digging and construction area, water play, games and ball play, scooters and bikes as well as an outdoor reading, number and writing area.

Our areas are permanently set up and children develop independence in using them but they are enhanced weekly through planning around topics and interests.

Children have access to indoors and outdoors continuously throughout the session.

SEND

Any additional needs can be communicated to Nursery staff and we will work alongside parents and outside agencies to identify, monitor and support children with SEND. We can tailor our curriculum to focus on the needs and targets of individual children and pride ourselves on being an inclusive Nursery for all children.

Snack

We will provide a variety of snacks each day in Nursery along with milk and water.

Please send in 50p per week towards our snack fund and make sure we know about any intolerances/allergies.

Please also send a water bottle, clearly named, into Nursery with your child.

Learning Outdoors

We love to be outdoors in Nursery. We provide water proof trousers and jackets for Nursery but please send in wellies to keep in school. Your children will need a warm coat for winter. Please note that our outdoor learning will mean that your children get messy and have a fabulous time outside. Please don’t send in ‘best’ coats or trainer as they will get dirty!

Reading in Nursery

Each Friday your child will bring home a library book to borrow and enjoy at home. Please return this each Thursday and a new book will be sent home.

Ways to help your child at home

  • Read with your child regularly, talk about the story, the characters and the setting… let them turn the pages
  • Sing nursery rhymes and action songs
  • Promote independence within your daily routine eg. Dressing themselves, using the toilet independently, cleaning up after themselves
  • Practice counting to 10 and beyond, count objects and actions
  • Engage with class dojo, talk about what your child has been doing in school. Share any achievements or special days through dojo.
