Ready Steady Write

At Millbrook, we implement the Literacy Counts ‘Ready Steady Write’ (RSW) programme, for our English lessons. RSW uses a vehicle and model text to drive each unit of work.

Each unit has quality children’s literature embedded within it; they are inclusive and could be found in most classrooms. The programme includes dedicated segments for narrative or non-fiction outcomes, all centred around the importance of talk which ensures rich writing and deeper learning; whilst poetry creation is integrated into each curriculum block.

At Millbrook, each class focuses on a vehicular text each half-term which provides a written outcome based on either a narrative or non-narrative genre of writing. Each unit is broken down into lessons which all serve to give children the tools they need to complete a piece of writing as independently as possible. These lessons include SPAG learning, through Daily Sentence Accuracy, and smaller, shorter writing outcomes, or ‘incidental writes’ which are all geared towards producing the cumulative written outcome.

Daily Sentence Accuracy is a vital element of Ready Steady Write and encompasses word, sentence, and punctuation from the statutory National Curriculum programme of study for writing and Appendix 2 (Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation). At Millbrook, children must demonstrate using these skills across a range of writing to achieve end of year standards. This daily practice also helps build fluency and stamina for writing.

RSW, at Millbrook, allows us to emphasise the importance of books and literature in enabling children to become confident, happy and enthusiastic writers, with all the benefits this brings. This has meant that we follow a thorough and progressive curriculum to ensure our pupils have access to texts and writing opportunities linked to their year group.

Please see the Ready Steady Write Curriculum Coverage below:

Due to our vertical groupings, at Millbrook, we use the mixed age planning for our Pine (Reception/Year 1), Holly (Year 3/Year4), Hazel (Year 4/Year 5) and Chestnut (Year 5/Year 6) classes. Please see a copy of the mixed age planning below:

To ensure, continuity and progression through the year groups and classes, we have made sure our pupils have access to a wide range of texts. Please the texts each class is focusing throughout the year below:
