History

At Millbrook Community Primary school we believe that every child is a budding Historian. We know how exciting and amazing History is so strive to impart as much Historical knowledge and enquiry-based skills as possible in the time that they are with us. Young children tend to think that the world extends only as far back as they own personal History but we merely use this as a starting point to open up a world before their own time.

We have designed our Curriculum on a 3 year rolling programme utilising the KeyStage history website units that ask a range of Key Questions for each area of study.

The different Key stages cover differing aspects of History:

  • EYFS – Personal History – their own lives as well as their families lives
  • KS1 – British History and that of significant individuals.
  • KS2 – World History including ancient civilisations
  • Additionally KS1 and KS2 cover varying aspects of Local History too.

We encourage our children to use evidence and judgements to question and consequently interpret the past demonstrating good historical understanding.

A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

National curriculum 2013

We understand how much vocabulary is important in a subject such as History so we have complied a list of key historical terms that each subject area will cover. These increase in difficulty through the years and build on the previous year to subsequently broaden children’s understanding further through the key stages.
