Mental Health and Well being

At Millbrook Community Primary School, we constantly strive to support our children and their families.  Here you will find information about support both services have on offer to you.

PASTORAL

Pastoral Support

Millbrook Community Primary School is dedicated to supporting every child’s emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. We monitor and support children on a 1:1 basis or in a group on specific personal or social issues.  Our aim is to remove barriers for the children to enable them to access their education and enjoy their educational journey. All staff work together to help all children achieve their best, educationally, socially and emotionally. We make every effort to remove obstacles to aid successful learning and to equip young people with the confidence and skills to be enthusiastic learners and effective members of the community.

If you feel your child requires any pastoral support the class teacher is the person to contact in the first instance. If it is felt your child requires additional support they will be referred, with your permission, to Ms Gray our learning mentor.

Our class dojo pages are updated regularly with health and well being materials that can support you and your family.

CURRICULUM

Jigsaw – the mindful approach to PSHE

Teachers understand the need to create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters a sense of belonging and encourages students to take risks and learn from their mistakes. Our curriculum provision ensures that the children learn a wide range of new skills and knowledge. Overcoming challenges and solving problems can help students develop the self-confidence and coping skills needed to overcome adversity in their lives and thus better prepares them for the future. Staff take time to encourage healthy habits such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep, which have been found to be associated with good mental health and more specifically our teachers  teach students coping skills such as calm time, deep breathing, and positive self-talk, which have been found to be associated with resilience. These skills can help students better regulate their emotions and respond to stress in a healthy way.

Children receive weekly lessons to brings together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. A lesson a week with the teaching resources included, helps teachers to focus on tailoring the lessons to their children’s needs and to enjoy building the relationship with their class, getting to know them better as unique human beings.

Mental Health Support Teams provide direct mental health support to our primary school.

The service aims to promote the early detection and prevention of mental health problems across the whole school, and strengthen links between schools and mental health services. The team will provide direct, ongoing support to schools around mental health and wellbeing.
