VIPERS

At Millbrook, our children use the VIPERS reading domains in every Power of Reading lesson, any group reading sessions and independent reading sessions.

VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the reading curriculum.  They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.

VIPERS stands for

  • Vocabulary
  • Inference
  • Prediction
  • Explanation
  • Retrieval
  • Sequence or Summarise

These skills ensure that the children have a holistic approach to their reading comprehension and vocabulary. The children are able to identify which domain they are required to use to inform their answer and this has helped to develop the depth and breadth of the children’s reading comprehension.

We use the following documents to support staff members as well as parents to aid questioning of each aspect.

To support our assessment of reading and in line with our school’s assessment and planning for other subjects in the curriculum we use the follow Chris Quigley milestones, which are linked to the VIPERS.
